These books have been translated into 4 languages including German, Chinese, Spanish, and Italian. He was the guest editor of a special issue on Children’s Dreams and Nightmares of the academic journal, DREAMING, (Washington: American Psychological Association, 2003).

Alan Siegel's research has included the first systematic study of the dreams of expectant fathers. His research revealed that men have unique dream patterns during pregnancy that suggest a profound emotional involvement from the earliest days of the pregnancy. In his book, Dream Wisdom, he describes how awareness of the "secret life of the expectant father" can help men overcome emotional alienation and enhance their connection to their wife and child.

His 1991 research on the nightmares of the Oakland Firestorm survivors was a front-page Associated Press story and was featured on CNN Headline News and on many local and regional print and broadcast media. His research illuminated the patterns in trauma survivors’ dreams by studying two week dream journals. He also discovered that survivors whose houses did not burn had hidden symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder and suffered from nightmares as bad or worse that those who lost their homes. This was due to the fact that they did not receive emotional support and validations for the emotional traumas and losses they suffered.

In October 2001, Dr. Siegel was invited back to appear on NBC's Today Show to provide information and reassurance about the epidemic of nightmares in adults and children all over the world after the terrorists attacks of September 2001. He also contributed to the International Association for the Study of Dreams' online nightmare page which provided guidance for understanding and resolving nightmares in the post-9-11 era.
